10月9日,Dr. Zhang Xuan, Writing Center, University of British Columbia, Canada, was invited by Ms. Zou Min, Writing Center, School of Foreign Languages,Give an Academic writing workshop entitled "Academic Oral Presentations: Presenting as a Scholar"。The workshop was conducted by live streaming, with the participation of teachers and students from Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing Normal University and other universities。

Starting from the academic and research attributes of English academic speech, Zhang Xuan encourages students to switch from performance-oriented academic speech to communication-oriented academic speech, and consider its purpose and audience type in the process of preparing academic speech。She then introduced the audience to an important framework for organizing academic presentations, Swales' (1990) model of CARS。On this basis, two examples are used to demonstrate how speakers use the three steps of CARS model in the speech process, that is, to establish the research field, establish the research status, occupy the research status, construct the English academic speech, and use concepts to explain and highlight the research significance to make the speech more attractive。In the Q&A session, Zhang Xuan had an in-depth exchange with the students on academic speech practice strategies and other issues。
